Clare is a practitioner and researcher of Screendance, an artistic practice that combines the languages of dance and film to create a work that is not possible in a live setting. She uses the camera as a dancer in the work rather than a documenter and generate the on screen choreography through improvisational scores with other movers present. She composes the choreography through the process of editing with a focus on rhythm and the generation of meaning through the juxtaposition of images. Thematically, she is interested in exploring universal predicaments through intimate and often humorous frames.
A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Clare Schweitzer received her early training in ballet, performing in more Nutcrackers than she has fingers to count with. She continued her dance training at Mount Holyoke College, where she graduated in 2012 with a B.A. in Dance and Mathematics cum laude with high honors. In 2014, Clare moved to London to begin her postgraduate studies as a part of EDge, the repertory company associated with the London Contemporary Dance School, and had the opportunity to tour with the company around the UK and internationally in countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, France, Portugal and Austria.
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Clare has performed with groups such as Kinetech, Garrett+Moulton and Sarah Berges Dance. She currently works as a Development/Production Associate with Dance Film SF (Formerly the San Francisco Dance Film Festival) and as a videographer/editor for Rapt Productions.
